Great Leaders Don't Create Followers. They Create More Leaders.
The real test of leadership isn't how many people follow you — it's how many people grow because you invested in them.
Great Leaders Don't Create Followers. They Create More Leaders.
I have sat across the table from a lot of leaders. Founders, pastors, presidents, owners who built something out of nothing. And the ones I remember most were never the loudest people in the room.
They were the ones other people wanted to become.
That is the real test of leadership. Not how many people follow you. How many people grow because you invested in them.
The Title Never Told the Whole Story
It is easy to measure leadership by the org chart. Title, corner office, the name on the door. None of that is leadership. It is just position.
I have watched leaders with impressive titles who could not get their own team to bring them bad news. And I have watched a shift supervisor with no formal authority hold a team together through a season that would have broken most companies.
The difference was never the title. It was trust.
Trust Is Built in the Small Moments, Not the Big Speech
Nobody trusts a leader because of one great meeting or one inspiring quarterly kickoff. Trust gets built the same way a foundation gets built. One layer at a time, poured consistently, over time nobody is watching closely.
It is the leader who follows through on the small commitment nobody would have noticed if they had skipped it. It is the leader who says the hard thing directly instead of letting it fester. It is the leader who shows up the same way on a good week and a bad one.
Every interaction is an opportunity to build credibility. Every one. The quick hallway conversation. The tough performance review. The moment you admit you were wrong in front of your team. None of it is small. It is all a deposit or a withdrawal.
Listening Comes Before Leading
The strongest organizations I have worked with are built by leaders who listen first. Not because listening is a soft skill to check off a list, but because you cannot lead people well if you do not actually understand what they are carrying.
A team member who feels heard will run through a wall for you. A team member who feels managed will do exactly what is required and not one ounce more.
Listening first does not mean waiting for permission to lead. It means gathering the truth before you act on it. Clear communication and difficult decisions made with integrity only work when they are built on top of real understanding, not assumptions.
The Real Job Is Building Your Replacement
Here is the shift that changes everything: stop asking, "How do I get people to follow me?" Start asking, "How do I build people who could lead this without me?"
That question changes how you delegate. It changes what you say yes to and what you hand off. It changes how you handle someone else's mistake, because now you are coaching a future leader through it instead of just fixing the problem yourself.
A leader who only creates followers has built something that cannot outlast them. A leader who creates more leaders has built something that can scale.
This is the exact reason Fortis exists. We do not believe a strategic plan or an org chart is worth much if the people inside it are not growing into the leaders the plan requires. Our Executive Coaching work is built around this idea specifically: developing the leaders who can actually carry the vision forward, not just the leader who wrote it down.
Where This Starts
You do not need a title change to start leading this way. You need to start treating every interaction — every one — as a chance to build trust instead of spend it.
Ask yourself this week: is there someone on your team you could be investing in right now, someone you could be handing more trust to, more ownership to, more of the "why" behind decisions instead of just the "what"?
That is where leadership that actually multiplies begins.
If this resonated, I would love to hear about it. Reach out anytime, or if you want to talk through where your leadership team stands today, schedule a free Discovery Call. No pitch, just a conversation.
