Business Development Isn't About Selling. It's About Solving.
Selling starts with a pitch. Business development starts with a question. The difference is everything.
Business Development Isn't About Selling. It's About Solving.
Somewhere along the way, business development got confused with sales. They are not the same thing, and treating them like they are is exactly why so many good relationships never turn into real partnerships.
Selling starts with a pitch. Business development starts with a question.
The Best Opportunities Are Never the Obvious Ones
Anyone can respond to a request for proposal. Anyone can answer the phone when a prospect already knows what they need and is ready to buy. That is not business development. That is order taking.
Real business development happens earlier than that — in the space before the client even knows they have a problem worth solving.
The best opportunities I have ever been part of came from understanding a client's business well enough to see a challenge they had not put into words yet. Not because I was smarter than them. Because I was paying closer attention than the next person in the room.
That takes patience most people are not willing to spend. It means asking questions with no immediate payoff. It means sitting in a conversation that is not about your product or your service at all — just about their business, their pressures, their goals — and genuinely caring about the answers.
Relationships Create Conversations. Conversations Build Trust. Trust Creates Partnerships.
This is the order that actually works, and it cannot be skipped or reversed.
You cannot build trust with someone you have not had an honest conversation with. You cannot have an honest conversation with someone you do not have a real relationship with. And you cannot build a real relationship by leading with what you are selling.
Every strong client partnership I have ever built started the same simple way: a conversation with no immediate ask attached to it. Just genuine curiosity about their business, their challenges, and where they wanted to go.
This is exactly why every Fortis engagement begins with what we call a Discovery Call. No cost, no pressure, no pitch. Just a real conversation about where an organization stands and what is standing between them and where they want to be. It is not a sales call dressed up as something friendlier. It is the actual first step, because you cannot solve a problem you have not taken the time to understand.
Solving Before They Ask Is a Discipline, Not a Talent
Some people assume this kind of intuition is a gift you either have or do not. It is not. It is a discipline anyone can build.
It starts with slowing down. Instead of walking into a conversation ready to talk about what you offer, walk in ready to understand what they are dealing with. Ask about the parts of the business that keep them up at night. Ask what they wish someone had warned them about a year ago. Ask what is working right now that they are worried will not scale.
Then actually listen to the answers instead of listening for your opening to pitch.
The businesses and leaders who do this consistently are never scrambling for their next opportunity. Their next opportunity finds them, because the people they have talked to trust that they understand the problem before they understand the solution.
Growth Built on Trust Lasts Longer Than Growth Built on Persuasion
A client who was persuaded into a decision is one bad quarter away from second-guessing it. A client who trusts you because you understood their problem before they had to explain it stays a client for years.
That is the whole philosophy behind how Fortis approaches Business Development and Growth Strategy with our own clients. We are not interested in a quick close. We are interested in relationships strong enough to hold a business through its next decade of growth, not just its next quarter.
Where This Starts
The next time you sit down with a prospective client or partner, try leaving the pitch out of the first conversation entirely. Ask the questions. Listen for the challenge they have not said out loud yet. Let the relationship come first.
The business will follow.
If this resonated, I would love to hear about it. Reach out anytime, or if you want to talk through what's actually driving your growth right now, schedule a free Discovery Call. No pitch, just a conversation.
